Collectif contre l’islamophobie en France: Julien MARTIN supports the violation of freedom of expression and association before the ECHR

Our application to the ECHR against France and in support of the interests of the Collectif contre l’islamophobie en France (CCIF) was communicated to the defendant government on January 9, 2023.

The application concerns the dissolution of the association “Association de Défense des Droits de l’Homme – Collectif contre l’Islamophobie en France” (hereinafter “CCIF”) on the basis of article L. 212-1 of the French Internal Security Code (CSI).

A few days after the attack on Samuel Paty, a teacher murdered on October 16, 2020 for presenting cartoons of Mohammed during a class, the Minister of the Interior announced in several media his intention to initiate proceedings with a view to dissolving the petitioner, after declaring, among other things, that it was involved in the event and describing it as “an Islamist officine”.

In his capacity as the applicant’s lawyer, Mr Julien MARTIN claimed a violation of Articles 10 and 11 of the Convention and maintained that the dissolution of the CCIF constituted a disproportionate interference with his rights to freedom of expression and association.
